The southern part of the sound is fairly clear, while the northern part is rather foul. Settlement along the sound is quite sparse, with the only densely populated area being around the coastal village of <a href="ssr:497275" data-county="Møre og Romsdal" data-lat="63.2679" data-lng="8.52913" data-municipality="Aure" data-type="Tettsted">Aure</a>.</p>
