Aursundet runs between Ertvågsøya and Rottøya on the west side, and the mainland on the east side, from the eastern part of Arasvikfjorden northward to Gjerdavika. The southern part of the sound is fairly clear, while the northern part is rather foul. Settlement along the sound is quite sparse, with the only densely populated area being around the coastal village of Aure.

Den søndre delen av sundet er ganske ren, den nordre delen derimot nokså uren. Bebyggelsen langs sundet er temmelig glissen, tettgrendt er det bare rundt strandstedet Aure.

The current usually flows outward (northward) and is strongest during rising tide. During falling tide, it occasionally flows inward. This is considered a sign of rough weather out at sea. Between Barlauphammaren, Bjørnaholmen, and Ruøya, the current can be quite strong.

There is a bridge over Aursundet, the bridge Aursundbrua, connecting Ruøya to the mainland, with a clearance height of 16 meters. Over Mjosundet, the bridge Mjosundbrua connects Ertvågsøya to Rottøya, with a clearance height of 28 meters.

Strømmen går som regel ut (N-over) og sterkest med stigende vann. Med fallende vann setter den av og til inn. Dette anses som tegn på uvær ute i havet. Mellom Barlauphammaren, Bjørnaholmen og Ruøya kan strømmen gå temmelig stri.
