title_en Masfjorden
title_no Masfjorden
description_en
Masfjorden is about 11 nautical miles long and splits into two at the innermost point. The fjord is clean and almost free of shallows and drying areas. It is therefore easy to navigate, and even large vessels can go close to the shore almost everywhere.

The fjord and its side arms are surrounded by high, steep mountainsides that reach up to 700 meters in height near the shoreline. The mountainsides are mostly covered with deciduous and coniferous forests. Due to the topographical conditions, the area around Matre experiences some of the highest amounts of precipitation in the country. The settlement is concentrated in 5-6 locations, otherwise, the fjord is almost deserted.

The tidal current is not particularly strong, and the current conditions are therefore largely dependent on weather and wind, as well as the inflow of freshwater.

There are few usable harbors and anchorages in Masfjorden.

Warning:

Between Duesundøyna and Masfjorden, at Skarvetangen, there is a cable ferry. Crossing traffic with a draft greater than 2 meters should only pass when the cable ferry is docked, and must call the ferry on VHF channel 8 before entering the caution area.

The ferry operates at a speed of 4-6 knots and has a crossing time of approximately 6 minutes. For more information, contact Wergeland Halsvik AS at phone number 95 12 02 45 or Hordaland Road Office v/Arnljot Jordal at phone number 94 57 84 69.

A safety distance of 150 meters from the ferry and ferry terminals applies to all vessels. Cable depth 0 - 65 meters.

When the ferry is docked, the cable is at a depth of about 30 meters mid-fjord. The sides of the ferry will be marked with CABLE FERRY, illuminated during dark hours.
