<p>Tromsø is a market town that, among other things, hosts the county administration for Troms county. Tromsø is a university town and also offers educational opportunities that make it the leading school city in the region.<br />

<h3>Current and tidal conditions</h3>
<p>In Tromsø, high water occurs approximately 1 hour 19 minutes after the moon's culmination (harbor time). Spring high water occurs 1 day 16 hours after full and new moon (age of the tide). The mean water height above chart datum – Zo – is 1.54 m. The difference between mean high and low water is 1.77 m. Between mean spring high and low water, the difference is 2.32 m. For neaps, the corresponding difference is 1.23 m. The difference between the vernal equinox spring low water and the autumnal equinox spring high water is 3.09 m. The highest and lowest measured water levels are 3.60 m and -0.48 m, respectively, measured from chart datum.<br />
In the districts west of Tromsø, high water occurs somewhat earlier.</p>
