Harstad is also known as the oil capital of Northern Norway with<br />
Statoil's northern area office, the military town with the coastal ranger command, the cultural town with the Northern Norway festival, and the workshop town with Harstad mechanical workshop. Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes is located 44 km south of the city center.</p>
<p>Harstad is a hub for local boat traffic in the district. There are daily calls from the northbound and southbound coastal express, fast boat routes to Tromsø, and bus connections to Narvik, Vesterålen, Lofoten, and Bodø.</p>
<p>The entire port area, with the exception of the innermost bays, is ice-free in winter.</p>
<p>The Customs Service, the Norwegian Maritime Authority, and Det Norske Veritas have offices in the town. The town has been designated as the main base for oil activities north of the 62nd parallel, and in this connection, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, Det Norske Oljeselskap, Lundin, and Aibel have offices here.</p>

<p>In Harstad, high and low tides occur approximately 30 minutes earlier than in Tromsø. The difference between mean spring high and low water is 1.86 m.</p>
