<h3>The island</h3>
<p>Hopen Island on Svalbard is a remote Arctic island located in the Barents Sea. It lies roughly at the same latitude as the southern tip of Spitsbergen, about 115 NM east of it.</p>
<p>The weather conditions on Hopen are very unfavorable, with especially frequent fog and rain. The island is also surrounded by ice for much of the winter. The tidal current, which shifts with high and low tide, rushes around the island with exceptional force. In certain areas, especially around the southern and northern tips, it creates a violent sea that can be dangerous for smaller vessels.</p>
<h3>Hopen Meteorological Station</h3>
<p>The Hopen Meteorological Station is located in the southeast part of the island, in Husdalen, approximately 7 km from the southern tip. The station is still manned and operational, consisting of several buildings, a helicopter landing pad, multiple large antennas, and supporting infrastructure.</p>
<p>The station collects data on current weather conditions at set intervals, every three hours. Weather forecasts are broadcast twice daily, at 11:00 and 23:00 UTC, on VHF channel 12 and on medium wave 1750 kHz. The station is particularly well-positioned for clear transmissions toward the fishing grounds north of Svalbard.</p>
<p>Hopen has no harbor, so all supplies during the summer must be transported from Coast Guard vessels to the shore using small boats. In winter, mail and smaller supplies are delivered to the station by helicopter.</p>
<p>Hopen is an important landing and refueling site for helicopters, especially in connection with rescue operations.</p>

<h3>Øya</h3>
<p>Øya Hopen på Svalbard er en ensomt beliggende ishavsøy i Barentshavet. Den ligger på omtrent samme bredde som S-spissen av Spitsbergen og 115 n mil E for denne.</p>
<p>Det er ugunstige værforhold på Hopen med spesielt mye tåke og regn. Øya er også omkranset av is store deler av vinteren. Tidevannsstrømmen, som skifter ved høy- og lavvann, jager rundt øya med usedvanlig styrke, og enkelte steder, særlig rundt S- og N-spissen setter den opp en voldsom sjø som kan være farlig for mindre fartøyer.</p>
<h3><br>Hopen meteorologiske stasjon</h3>
<p>Hopen meteorologiske stasjon ligger SE på øya, i Husdalen, ca. 7 km fra sørspissen. Denne stasjonen er fortsatt bemannet og i drift, og består av flere bygninger, helikopterlandingsplass, flere store antenner og tilhørende infrastruktur.</p>
<p>Stasjonen samler inn data om den aktuelle værsituasjonen ved gitte tidspunkter, hver 3. time. Værvarselet sendes ut 2 ganger i døgnet, kl 11:00 og 23:00 utc, på VHF kanal 12 og på mellombølge 1750 kHz. Stasjonen er spesielt godt plassert for klare sendinger mot fiskefeltene nord for Svalbard. Hopen har ikke havn, så alt må av forsyninger om sommeren må fraktes fra Kysvaktskip til stranden i småbåter. Om vinteren fraktes post og mindre forsyninger til stasjonen med helikopter.</p>
<p>Hopen er viktig som landings- og bunkringsplass for helikopter, spesielt i sammenheng med redningsaksjoner.</p>

<p>The island has no sheltered bays that may serve as harbours. It is so shallow inshore along the whole island that at 100- 200 m from the shore very little sea is required to set up breakers which make it difficult to land from a boat. On the east side of the island this shoal area extends a kilometre or more out from the shore in some places.</p>
<p>Both sides of the island are today used as anchorages to avoid bad weather or to transship from hunting vessels to mother ships of up to 20,000 tons. If there is a need to land, a boat channel to the shore may be found in the deepest and calmest water that is without breakers over a longish period of time. Experience has shown that it is best to land on the east side of the island where vessels can proceed carefully to anchor in depth of 10-15 m.</p>

<p>Øya har ingen beskyttede bukter som kan tjene som havn. Langs kysten rundt hele øya er det så grunt når man kommer 1-200 m fra stranden at det skal liten sjøgang til før det bryter og vanskeliggjør landgang med båt. På E-siden av øya kan dette grunnområdet enkelte steder strekke seg opp til en kilometer og mer utover fra land.</p>
<p>Begge sidene av øya blir i dag benyttet som ankringsplass for å søke ly ved dårlig vær, eller omlasting fra fangstfartøyer til moderskip på opptil 20 000 tonn. Dersom man skal på land, bør man finne seg ei båtlei inn til stranden der hvor det synes dypest og roligst uten brott over et lenger tidsrom. Erfaringsmessig kan det synes å være best å gå iland på E-siden av øya, idet man går forsiktig innover og ankrer på 10-15 m vann.</p>
