<p>Kirkenes is the municipal center for Sør-Varanger municipality and a regional port. In addition to municipal services, there are hospitals, district doctors and dentists' offices, veterinarians, pharmacies, cinemas, and swimming pools. Additionally, there are all kinds of stores, hotels, and restaurants. A well-developed service offering and infrastructure with deep-water quay facilities, shipping agents specialized in Russia, supply facilities, etc. Seamen's club.</p>
<p>Kirkenes port is preferred by the Russian trawler fleet for, among other things, supplies, crew changes, maintenance stays, lay-ups, etc. Proximity to Russia is and has been significant for the development of the maritime environment in Kirkenes.</p>
<p>Other industries include a cement product factory, asphalt factory, gas factory, modular building factory, freezing plant, salmon slaughterhouse, as well as a number of smaller companies within industries such as electronics and mechanics. The military, with GSV, is also a major employer.</p>
<p>Kirkenes is visited by the coastal express (hurtigruten), freight route ships, and cargo vessels. In the summer, it is the terminus for the North Norway bus routes. Kirkenes has an airport (Høybuktmoen) with daily flight connections to Southern Norway.</p>
<p>There is a customs office in Kirkenes, as well as Finnish, French, Swedish, and German consulates. Russia is represented by a consulate general.</p>

<h3>Current and Tidal Conditions</h3>
<p>The current conditions along the quays can be challenging due to the strong current in Langfjorden.</p>
<p>The current in the harbor changes approximately 1.5 hours after high tide and 1.5 hours after low tide, and at times it can become quite strong, around 2 knots. In northern weather, the harbor is not good for smaller vessels. Kirkenes is a standard harbor in the "Tide Tables for the Norwegian Coast with Svalbard".</p>
<p>The average difference between spring high tide and spring low tide is 2.72 m. High and low tides occur on average 15 minutes later than in Vardø.</p>

<p>Kirkenes er kommunesenter for Sør-Varanger kommune og regionhavn. Foruten de kommunale tjenester er her sykehus, distriktslege- og tannlegekontor, veterinær, apotek, kino og svømmehall. Videre alle slags forretninger, hoteller og restauranter. Godt utbygd servicetilbud og infrastruktur med dypvann kaifasiliteter, skipsagenter spesialisert på Russland, forsyningsfasiliteter m.m. Sjømannsklubb.</p>
<p>Kirkenes havn foretrekkes av russisketrålerflåten for blant annet forsyning, crewskift, verkstedopphold, opplag osv. Nærheten til Russland er og har hatt storbetydning for utvikling av det maritimt miljøet i Kirkenes.</p>
<p>Av industri ellers kan nevnes sementvarefabrikk, asfaltfabrikk, gassfabrikk, modulbygg fabrikk, fryseri, lakseslakteri, samt en del mindre bedrifter innenfor bransjer som elektronikk og mekanisk. Forsvaret med GSV er også en stor arbeidsplass.</p>
<p>Kirkenes anløpes av hurtigruten, godsruteskip og lastebåter. Om sommeren er her endestasjon for Nord-Norgebussen. Kirkenes har flyplass (Høybuktmoen) med daglige flyforbindelser til Syd-Norge. </p>
<p>Det er tollkontor i Kirkenes, samt finsk, fransk, svensk og tysk konsulat. Russland er representert med generalkonsulat.</p>
<p>Losstasjon med statsloser som bestilles ved losformidlingen i Lødingen.</p>
<h3>Strøm og tidevannsforhold</h3>
<p>Strømforholdene langs kaiene kan være vanskelige på grunn av sterk strøm i Langfjorden.</p>
<p>Strømmen i havnen skifter ca 1,5 time etter høyvann og ca 1,5 time etter lavvann, og til tider kan den bli ganske sterk, ca 2 knop. I N-lig vær er havnen ikke god for mindre fartøyer. Kirkenes er standardhavn i «Tidevannstabeller for den norske kyst med Svalbard ».</p>
<p>Midlere forskjell mellom spring høyvann og spring lavvann er 2,72 m. Høy- og lavvann inntreffer i middel 15 minutter senere enn i Vardø.</p>
