<p>Hammerfest is located on the W side of Kvaløya and is the administrative center for Hammerfest municipality. The town has long prided itself as the world's northernmost city and has its own Polar Bear Club located in the town hall. The town was the first in Norway to get electric street lights after its reconstruction following the town fire in 1890.<br />

Industry consists mainly of fish processing and there are freezer plants, fillet factories, fish driers, canning factory etc. Other industries include a forge and mechanical workshop, motor workshops and timber products factory. The town exports fish, fish products and natural gas (LPG, LNG) and condensate. Salt and oil are imported, but otherwise there is little direct import. <p>The town is the centre for local traffic in western Finnmark and the north and south bound Hurtigruten calls daily. Coastal cargo boats and ships on the North Norway – Grimsby route load and unload in the harbour. The town is connected to the road network (E6) with a bridge over Kvalsundet.</p> The customs office is located next to Dampskipskaia. Otherwise there is the county hospital, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, compass correction, banks, hotels and guest houses in the town.</p>
<p>Hammerfest has a short runway airport.</p>
<p>The harbor is ice-free and has a steady, good holding ground.</p>
<h3>Sailing Information</h3>
<p>W and SW winds can bring in some sea, but in winds from other directions, the harbor is sheltered.</p>
<h3>Current and Tidal Conditions</h3>
<p>The average difference between spring high tide and spring low tide is 233 cm. High and low tides occur on average 40 minutes later than in Tromsø and 72 minutes earlier than in Honningsvåg.</p>

<p>Hammerfest ligger på W-siden av Kvaløya og er administrasjonsenter for Hammerfest kommune. Byen har i alle år titulert seg som verdens nordligste by og med egen Isbjørnklubb beliggende i rådhuset. Byen var den første som fikk elektrisk gatelys i Norge etter gjennoppbyggingen etter bybrannen i 1890.<br />

Industrien består vesentlig av fiskeforedling, og det finnes fryserier, filet abrikker, fisketørkerier, hermetikkfabrikk mm. Av annen industri kan nevnes smie og mek verksted, motorverksteder og trevarefabrikk. Byen eksporterer fisk, fiskeprodukter samt naturgass (LPG, LNG) og kondensat. Det importeres salt og oljer, men ellers er den direkte import liten.</p>
<p>Byen er sentrum for lokal trafikken i Vest-Finnmark og anløpes dagliga N-og S-gåendehurtigrute. Kystgods- og lastebåter i ruten Nord-Norge–Grimsby losser og laster i havnen. Byen er tilknyttet riksveinettet (E6) med bru over Kvalsundet.</p>
<p>Tollbua ligger like ved Dampskipskaia. For øvrig finnes fylkessykehus, leger, tannleger, apotek, kompasskorrigør, banker, hotell og pensjonater i byen.<br />
Hammerfest har kortbaneflyplass.</p>
<p>Havnen er isfri og har jevn, god holdebunn.</p>

<p>W- og SW-lig vind kan sette en del sjø inn, men i vind fra andre retninger er havnen lun.</p>
