<p>The town of Moss lies at the mouth of the Moss River, which originates from the largest lake in Østfold, Vansjø. The town is a typical industrial and commercial town.</p>
<p>The town boasts varied nature with Lake Vansjø and a beautiful coastal landscape. Lake Vansjø offers rich fishing opportunities and is a paradise for paddling and other boating activities. Along the coast, both on the mainland and Jeløya, there are several beautiful beaches.</p>
<p>The town is connected to the national road and railway network and has good shipping connections to domestic and international destinations. The town is also connected to Horten by passenger and car ferry across the Oslofjord.</p>
<p>The inner harbor tends to freeze in the winter, but a channel is kept open with the help of an icebreaker.</p>
<p>Moss harbor consists of two harbor areas, one north and one south of the Canal. The Canal connects the two harbor areas.<br />
Note! The two-sided bascule bridge over the Canal is closed. Minimum clearance height is 4.5 meters, depth is 4 meters.</p>

<p>On the stretch from Reiertangen to Canal in Moss, the speed must not exceed 5 knots.</p>
<h3>Current and tidal conditions</h3>
<p>The current in the Canal changes with the tide and weather conditions. Normally, there is little current, but under adverse weather conditions, the current can exceed a speed of 1 knot in either direction, depending on the wind. There is a regular tide, and the mean difference betwe en high water (HW) and low water (LW) during spring tides is about 30 cm.</p>

<p>Moss by ligger ved utløpet av Mosseelva, som kommer fra den største innsjøen i Østfold, Vansjø. Byen er en typisk industri- og handelsby.</p>
<p>Byen har variert natur med innsjøen Vansjø og et vakkert kystlandskap. I Vansjø er det rikt fiske og et eldorado for padling og annet båtliv. Langs kysten, både på fastlandet og Jeløya, er det en rekke flotte badestrender.</p>
<p>Byen er tilknyttet landets vei? og jernbanenett, og har gode skipsforbindelser med inn? og utland. Byen har forbindelse med Horten ved person? og bilferje over Oslofjorden.</p>
<p>Indre havn fryser gjerne til om vinteren, men råk holdes åpen ved hjelp av isbryter.</p>
<p>Moss havn består av 2 havneområder, et nord og et syd for Kanalen. Kanalen forbinder de 2 havneområdene.<br />

<p>Strømmen i Kanalen skifter med tidevannet og værforholdene. Normalt er det lite strøm, men under ugunstige værforhold kan strømmen gå med mer enn 1 knops fart i den ene eller annen retning, avhengig av vinden. Det er regelmessig tidevann, og midlere forskjell mellom spring HW og LW er ca 30 cm.</p>

Her er det også ankerplass for fartøyer i karantene. Slepebåtassistanse kan påregnes.</p>
