Valvågen is a good harbor, but the approach is somewhat tricky.

It is possible to enter south of Sandskjæret. The channel, which has a depth of 4\u202fm, is marked by three iron poles. One should pass on the south side of the two easternmost poles and on the north side of the westernmost pole. West of the southern tip of Sandskjæret lies a 3\u2011meter shoal. Continue by steering toward the southeastern iron pole on the shoal area off Gryta, passing between this pole and Gårdskjæret. From there, steer into the bay, keeping on the west side of two iron poles.

One may also approach between the two iron poles marking Fatet and Bjørgagrunnen. With the summit of Bergsheia (on Dyrøya) just clear south of Høyholmen, this alignment leads between the poles. From there, one can proceed southward toward the iron pole southeast of Gryta and continue as described above.

After passing the iron poles between Fatet and Bjørgagrunnen, it is also possible to steer toward Laneset and pass midway between the two iron poles off Lanesøyra. The channel here has a depth of 5\u202fm. Continue along the shore into the bay.

The anchorage has a clay bottom.

Man kan gå inn S om Sandskjæret. Løpet, som er 4 m dypt, er merket med tre jernstenger. Man går på S\u2011siden av de to E\u2011ligste og på N\u2011siden av den W\u2011ligste. W for S\u2011pynten av Sandskjæret ligger en 3 m grunne. Videre styrer man opp mot den sørøstre jernstangen på grunnfla et ved Gryta og går mellom denne og Gårdskjæret. Så styres inn på bukta hvor man går på W\u2011siden av to jernstenger.

Man kan også holde inn mellom de to jernstengene på Fatet og Bjørgagrunnen. Medet toppen av Bergsheia (Dyrøya) så vidt fri S om Høyholmen leder mellom jernstengene. Derfra kan man gå S\u2011over mot jernstangen SE for Gryta og videre som beskrevet ovenfor.

Når man har passert jernstengene mellom Fatet og Bjørgagrunnen, kan man også styre over mot Laneset og gå midt mellom de to jernstengene oppunder Lanesøyra. Løpet her er 5 m dypt. Videre holdes langs land inn på vågen.
