From the middle of Aursundet, two narrow channels lead westward to Mjosundet. The southern channel, on the south side of Rottøya, is only 2.5 meters deep. The northern channel, Smalsundet, is deeper but more complicated to navigate, as several shoals marked with iron rods lie consecutively mid-channel.

A bridge crosses the sound — Smalsundbrua — with a clearance height of 8 meters. The best approach to Mjosundet  is therefore from the north, where the channels are wider and clearer. Keep well clear of the 2-meter shoal west of Staurholmen. The bridge over Mjosundet has a clearance height of 28 meters. Speed limit in the sound is 4 knots.

Fra midt i Aursundet fører to smale løp W-over til Mjosundet. Det søndre løpet, på S-siden av Rottøya, er bare 2,5 m dypt, det nordre, Smalsundet, er dypere, men mer kronglet, da det ligger flere grunner merket med jernstenger, etter hverandre midtvaters i sundet.

Bru over sundet, Smalsundbrua, friseilingshøyde 8 m. Den beste innseilingen til Mjosundet er derfor fra N, hvor løpene er bredere og renere. Hold godt klar av 2-m grunnen W av Staurholmen. Bro over Mjosundet friseilingshøyde 28 m. Fartsreduksjon 4 kn i sundet.
