Only about 2 km of land separates Ålfjorden from the bottom of Grindafjorden in Ryfylke.
The land around the fjord, especially in the outer part, is high and forested. Beyond Vikevik, the terrain becomes gentler and largely without forest. The settlement is sparse and scattered, especially on the W side, but there are quite a few cottages, especially at the bottom of the fjord.
The current follows the tide in and out of the fjord, but the weather has a strong influence. Strong wind from the N gives S-going current and pushes up the water at the fjord bottom. Strong wind from the S gives N-going current which increases in speed N-ward, and at Tittelsnes it can be over 3 knots. Many eddies form along the coast.
In cold winters, the ice usually extends from the fjord bottom to Buavikneset, and the same occurs in all small coves.
The fjord is open and clear. N of Nappholmen lies a 4 m shoal without a marker. You pass W of the shoal with Buavikneset to Nautatangen and E of the shoal with the W-most, small skerry off Haraldseidvågen, W of Toranes, to Arhamarneset.
There are many good anchorage spots in Ålfjorden.
Bare ca. 2 km land skiller Ålfjorden fra bunnen av Grindafjorden i Ryfylke.
Landet rundt fjorden, særlig i ytre delen, er høyt og skogkledd. Innenfor Vikevik blir det slakere, og for en stor del uten skog. Bebyggelsen er sparsom og spredt, særlig på W\u2011siden, men det er en god del hyttebebyggelse, spesielt inne i bunnen av fjorden.
Strømmen følger tidevannet inn og ut fjorden, men været har sterk innvirkning. Sterk vind fra N gir S\u2011gående strøm og stuer vannet opp i fjordbunnen. Sterk vind fra S gir N\u2011gående strøm som øker i fart N\u2011over, og ved Tittelsnes kan den ha over 3 knops fart. Det danner seg mange bakevjer langs land.
I kalde vintrer ligger isen vanligvis fra fjordbunnen til Buavikneset, det samme i alle småbuktene.
Fjorden er åpen og ren. N av Nappholmen ligger en 4 m grunne uten stake. Man er W om grunnen med Buavikneset til Nautatangen og E om grunnen med W\u2011ligste, lille skjæret ut for Haraldseidvågen, W av Toranes, til Arhamarneset.
Det er mange bra ankerplasser i Ålfjorden.
