If approaching northward from Saltsteinsleia or out from Budadjupet, stay west of the shoals located on the eastern side of the fairway: Kolbeinflua, marked by a light and sound buoy. Then steer eastward on a course toward Fuglen, marked by a black beacon, or keep it slightly to port, until Jurtinden (the southernmost and highest peak on Tustna) aligns with Kvernberget. On this bearing, continue eastward between Fuglen and Kvitholmen fyr (Lighthouse), south of the light and sound buoy and the red buoy marking Midtflua.

The safe passage between Midtflua to the north and Eggfluan, marked by a green beacon to the south, is aligned with Bjugna in Hestskjæret fyr (Lighthouse). Bjugna is a shoal at the water surface about 1 nautical mile northwest of Dromskjæra; it always breaks, and in calm weather with heavy seas, the breakers are said to be audible up to a couple of nautical miles away.

From Kvitholmen fyr (Lighthouse), steer north of Bjugna. Continue toward Hestskjæret fyr (Lighthouse), or keep the lighthouse slightly to starboard, passing north of Marstrandstaran, between Myrgrunnan (marked by a light and sound buoy) and Bararman – the easternmost of which breaks constantly – and then north of Bararmskåkan. Bararman should not be approached closer than a couple of cables on the north side and 1 cable on the west side. Alternatively, one can pass south of Bjugna, Marstrandstaran, and Bararman.

Once Austklakken, near Litlsvortna, is passed, steer north of Hestskjæret fyr (Lighthouse) and on either side of Brakan, marked by an iron beacon. Brakan lies at the water surface at high tide, but at low tide it appears as a fairly large, black shoal.

From Hestskjæret fyr (Lighthouse) and further eastward to Kristiansund , the waters are clear, provided one does not come too close to shore and avoids the shoals offshore.

\n

If entering the outer fairway between Bud and Kristiansund from the open sea, one is clear north of the shoals on the west side of the southern part of the route – Kroppen– with Magnhildberget well north of Bremsneshatten. Bremsneshatten is a relatively low, distinctive mountain peak on the northeast side of Averøya, and resembles a flat-topped hat. One is also clear north-northeast of Kroppen when the summit of Melen is hidden behind Stemshesten.

Kommer man N-over fra Saltsteinsleia eller ut Budadjupet, holdes W om grunnene som ligger på E-siden av farvannet: Kolbeinflua, lys- og lydbøye. Man styrer så E-over med kurs på Fuglen, svart varde, eller med denne litt på babord baug, inntil Jurtinden (S-ligste, høyeste topp på Tustna) fås over Kvernberget. I dette medet holder man videre E-over mellom Fuglen og Kvitholmen fyr, S om lys- og lydbøyen og den rød bøye staken på Midtflua.

Friseilingsmed i løpet mellom Midtflua på N-siden og Eggfluan, grønn stake, på S-siden er Bjugna i Hestskjæret fyr. Bjugna er en grunne i vannflaten ca 1 nautisk mil NW av av Dromskjæra; den bryter bestandig, og i stille vær med tung sjø sies brottet å kunne høres inntil et par nautiske mil av.

Fra Kvitholmen fyr styres N om Bjugna. Videre holder man mot Hestskjæret fyr eller med fyret litt på styrbord baug og går derved N om Marstrandstaran, mellom Myrgrunnan, lys- og lydbøye, og Bararman – den østre bryter stadig –, og videre N om Bararmskåkan. Bararman må ikke gås nærmere enn et par kbl på N-siden og 1 kbl på W-siden. Man kan også holde S om Bjugna, Marstrandstaran og Bararman.

Når Austklakken, ved Litlsvortna er passert, styres N om Hestskjæret fyr og på hvilken som helst side av Brakan, jernbåke. Brakan ligger i vannflaten ved høyvann, men ved lavvann viser den seg som et temmelig stort, svart skjær.

Fra Hestskjæret fyr og videre E-over til Kristiansund er farvannet rent, når man ikke kommer for nær land og holder klar grunnene utenfor.

\n

Hvis man skal inn i ytre lei mellom Bud og Kristiansund fra havet, er man fri N om grunnene på W-siden av den søndre delen av leia – Kroppen – med Magnhildberget vel N om Bremsneshatten. Bremsneshatten er en forholdsvis lav, karakteristisk fjelltopp på NE-siden av Averøya, og ser ut som en flatpullet hatt. Man er fri NNE om Kroppen med toppen av Melen gjemt bak Stemshesten.
