Indre Steinsundet leads from Sognesj\u00f8en northwards to L\u00e5g\u00f8yfjorden. The sound is narrow and winding, but well marked.
The current sets predominantly northwards in the narrowest part of the sound, with speeds estimated to be up to 3 knots. The current is strongest at half flood and weakest at tidal shifts. Bridge clearance height is 15 m.
Vessels sailing northbound through Indre Steinsundet from the south should navigate between Samsundholmen and Sula.
Larger vessels coming from the north should not navigate west of H\u00f8nseholmen to reach Hardbakkev\u00e5gen, but instead go south of T\u00e5rnholmen. This provides ample turning space for the narrow entrances to the bay. At the entrance to the actual harbor in Hardbakke, the southern, 4.4 m deep, narrow passage should be used. However, if using the northern passage, stay well clear north of the iron rod.

Strømmen setter i sundets trangeste del for det meste N\u2011over, og farten antas å kunne bli opptil 3 knop. Strømmen er sterkest på halvflødd sjø og svakest når tidevannet skifter. Bru med friseilingshøyde 15 m.
Fartøyer som fra S seiler opp Indre Steinsundet, holder mellom Samsundholmen og Sula.
Litt større fartøyer som kommer fra N, bør ikke styre inn W om H\u00f8nseholmen for å komme til Hardbakkev\u00e5gen, men heller gå S om T\u00e5rnholmen. Man får da god svingeplass mot de trange innløpene til vågen. Ved innseilingen til selve havnen på Hardbakke bør det sørlige, 4,4 m dype, trange løpet benyttes. Hvis man imidlertid benytter det nordre løpet, holdes godt klar N om jernstangen.
