S\u00f8rfjorden is the waterway running south along the east and south sides of Oster\u00f8y. Apart from the northern part (Veafjorden), it is deep and clear. On both sides of the fjord, steep slopes with deciduous forest rise to heights of 500\u2013700 meters. The habitation is concentrated around some gentler areas. There are several good piers and anchoring spots.
The tidal currents flow inward toward the fjords around Oster\u00f8y on a rising tide, and in the opposite direction on a falling tide.
The tidal range and the times for high and low tide are relatively similar throughout the region. The exception is fjords with particularly narrow and shallow openings where the tide is delayed and tidal differences are smaller compared to the area outside.
Ice conditions
However, ice often forms at the fjord bottoms and in enclosed bays, but rarely poses
a hindrance to navigation.
S\u00f8rfjorden kalles farvannet S\u2011over langs E- og S\u2011siden av Oster\u00f8y. Den er, bortsett fra den nordre delen (Veafjorden), dyp og ren. P\u00e5 begge sidene av fjorden reiser bratte lier med lauvskog seg til 500\u2013700 m h\u00f8yde. Bebyggelsen er konsentrert rundt enkelte slakere partier. Det finnes flere gode kaier og ankerplasser.
Tidevannsstr\u00f8mmene g\u00e5r p\u00e5 stigende vann innover mot fjordene rundt Oster\u00f8y, og motsatt retning p\u00e5 fallenede vann.
Tidevannsamplituden og tidspunktene for h\u00f8y- og lavvann er relativt like i hele regionen. Unntaket er fjorder med spesielt trang og grunn \u00e5pning der tidevannet er forsinket og tidevannsforskjellene er mindre i forhold til omr\u00e5det utenfor.
Isfjorhold
Isen legger seg imidlertid ofte i fjordbunnene og i innelukkede v\u00e5ger, men blir sjelden til
hinder for seilasen.
