Kvits\u00f8y municipality, which is the smallest municipality in the country in terms of area, 5.7 km2, consists of 167 islands and islets at high tide, increasing with 198 skerries at low tide. The archipelago is located at the outermost part of Boknafjorden. Ydsteb\u00f8hamn is the central place on Kvits\u00f8y, where the municipal administration is located. Besides the municipal offices, there are services like a shop with a postal branch, bank, workshop, bunker, and holiday center. The main industries are agriculture, fishing, and aquaculture, with some other industries like wood products, plastics, packaging factory, and boat production.

Kvits\u00f8y lighthouse, Kvits\u00f8y church, and the cross are good sailing markers.

Current and Tide Conditions

\n

The current conditions at Kvits\u00f8y and in the archipelago are very irregular. During calm weather conditions, the current flows eastward when the sea rises and westward when it falls.

However, during onshore winds \u2013 especially during a SW gale \u2013 it can flow strongly eastward through the straits.

Kvitsøy kommune som er den minste kommunen i landet i areal, 5,7 km2, består av 167 øyer og holmer på flo sjø som øker med 198 skjær på fjære sjø. Øygruppen ligger ytterst i BoknafjordenYdstebøhamn er det sentrale stedet på Kvitsøy hvor kommuneadministrasjonen ligger. Foruten de kommunale kontorer er her handel med postfilial, bank, verksted, bunkers og feriesenter. Hovednæringene er jordbruk, fiske og havbruksnæring, og noe industri som trevare-, plast-, pakningsfabrikk og båtproduksjon.

Kvitsøy fyr, Kvitsøy kirke og korset er gode seilingsmerker.

Strøm og tidevannsforhold

\n

Strømforholdene Ved Kvitsøy og i øygruppen er svært uregelmessige. Under rolige værforhold går strømmen E-over når sjøen stiger og W-over når den faller.

Under pålandsvær – særlig under SW-kuling – kan den likevel gå sterkt E-over gjennom sundene.
